Internship Opportunities

Customized Internships and Practicum Opportunities

Paid internships are arranged through area colleges and universities, when the agreed duties by the student generate academic credit and will entail more than 100 hours.  Marilyn Black can discuss customized internship opportunities with individual students and their advisors; 814-677-3152, Ext. 105;  No matter what the student’s major field of study, the student is given a choice of several related projects to tackle in this supervised setting.

The Oil Region Alliance of Business, Industry & Tourism (a non-profit corporation with headquarters in Oil City, PA) offers customized internships and practicum opportunities to graduate and undergraduate students interested in tackling worthwhile real-life projects as part of this strategic rural economic development endeavor.  Build your resume while making a positive difference!

The Alliance administers the Oil Region National Heritage Area; its boundaries include Venango County plus the Titusville area in eastern Crawford County, in northwestern Pennsylvania.  Intern projects vary greatly; all majors are welcome.  Each internship is designed in cooperation with the potential interns and their educational institutions.  Here are some examples:

  • Historical Research
  • Building Preservation
  • Writing Interpretive Panels
  • Landscaping Historic Sites
  • Special Events Assistance
  • Developing Curriculum Materials
  • Translating into Other Languages
  • Artifact Inventories
  • Grant Closeout Reports
  • Historical Interpretation
  • Nominations for Markers
  • Writing Book Reviews
  • On-Site Surveys
  • Cultural Coordination
  • Educational Activities
  • Checking GeoCaches

Each internship is structured for one semester or shorter, in accordance with the student’s institution’s criteria.  The intern is directly supervised by staff in the Alliance’s Heritage Development Department, sometimes with additional guidance by Board members.

A subsidy is available to those interns who will be involved at least 100 hours; compensation is 50 cents over the current federal minimum wage, paid every two weeks.

Please make complete internship arrangements in advance, so you can select or design projects that blend your academic requirements and areas of interest.  Contact Mrs. Marilyn Black at the Oil Region Alliance; 217 Elm Street; Oil City, PA   16301; (800) 483-6264, Ext. 105;
